Why use a weighted pencil?
Learning to write or re-learning after an injury can be very challenging for many children and adults. For some, the weight of the pencil is too light for the hand and fingers to register its position in the hand in order write in an effective or functional way. Increasing the weight of the pencil gives increased proprioception in the hand, which can help to raise awareness of having the pencil in the fingers for writing. Fingers can then more firmly hold the pencil and position the fingers, keeping it in place for writing.
Weighted pencils can also be useful for those who have a tremor in the hand. Extra weight can help stabilise the hand, to enable more consistent handwriting. Other weighted products such as the fingerloop hand weight and the wraparound weights are also useful products for those that require additional weight through the hand and wrist.
The design of the Abilitations Weighted Pencil sets enable flexibilty with the positioning of the weight on the pencil. Changing the position the weight along the pencil varies the balance and sensation through the hand. The weight can also be used at the writing end of the pencil to encourage proper finger placement (similar to a weighted pencil grip).
