The Sensory Connection Program Manual and Handbook by Karen Moore provide information for a training programme that can be used to educate staff, caregivers, and patients.
Training begins with information on the sensory systems and how each of the senses can be used for calming and alerting. Once this is understood, education is provided on the connection between sensory input and emotional regulation and stress management. The programme also addresses common mental health problems such as disorganisation, dissociation, negative thinking, and self-injurious behaviours. Safety education is discussed as staff members and care providers need to have an appreciation of all the safety issues involved in leading groups, conducting individual treatment programmes, and making changes to environments.
The Manual and Handbook may be used in the following settings:
Acute and long term mental health units
Outpatient mental health treatment programmes
Substance abuse programmes
Programmes for patients with head injuries or neurological problems
Adolescent units
Geriatric settings
Programmes for adults with Developmental Disabilities
