Wrap-around-and-Finger-loop-Weights-and-ways-to-use-them Sensory Corner

At Sensory Corner, we love weighted products. Whether that be weighted animals, weighted blankets, or weighted pens, we have a wide range of choices. Sensory stimulation can calm or alert our brain. We know that use some things to relax (or calm) and other things we might use to focus, concentrate, or raise attention to (alert).

Hand or wrist weights are no exception. We would like to highlight some of the ways that hand weights can be used to improve daily life. The hand and wrist weights we have a easy to use. They fasten with hook and loop (velcro), and the fabric is soft against the skin.

Finger Loop Weights- Our Fingerloop Hand Weights sit on the back or palm of the hand and come in three different sizes (150g, 200g, 400g). The 150g is designed for a child's hand, and the 400g is designed for adults.

Wraparound Weights- The Wraparound weights come in 100g, 200g, and 300g weights. They come in sets of two. They can be used on the wrists, ankles, and can be joined together to make a longer weight if desired.

Some ideas on how to use Finger Loop and Wraparound Weights

These ideas are useful for people with (but not limited to): Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Stroke, Brain injury, Essential Tremor, Low muscle tone, and Parkinson's

  1. Develop Strength- This is probably one of the most obvious use of weights. Useful for rehabilitation, our weights are much lighter than other weights. Use as many Wraparound weights as required, or a combination of Finger Loop and Wraparound weights for weight training. The wraparound weights can be used on both the legs and arms.
  2. Raise awareness of an extremity- The use of a hand weight can alert the brain to enable function through awareness. Useful for people who experience decreased proprioceptive awareness (body awareness in relation to their other body parts) and reduced kinesthetic awareness (movement and coordination of movement).

  3. Stabilise a tremor- Weight on the hands and/or wrist can help stabilise a tremor in the hand to help improve function for eating, drinking, or writing.

4.  Improve gait and balance- Weight on the hand and/or wrist can help with balance and can improve gait when walking. Weights can improve arm swing and pelvis movement to improve walking.

5. Other uses- Wraparound weights can also be used on places other than arms and legs. Join multiple sets together and wear them in the following ways: Around your hat, as a sash, around your waist... Due to the fact that they Velcro to to themselves, the possibilities are only limited by your innovation.
